Web directories are the oldest kind of directory: a categorized list of websites, any topic, with a title, a short description and a link. Most of the ones from the 2000s are dead or ignored; the ones in this list still accept submissions, still get crawled and still publish a real link.

They do not send many visitors. What they add is referring domains from old, established sites in a mix that looks like a normal link profile, which is exactly what a new domain lacks. We treat them as the base layer of a campaign, never as the whole campaign.

What to watch: paid-only directories and directories that sell "featured" placement. We always skip the paid ones. We also drop any web directory that stops publishing links or starts looking like a link farm; the catalog is checked for that regularly.

Are web directories still worth submitting to?
